Claire Maguire, “The Last Dance”
This is my #9 jam of the year. A lot of people were understandably moved when Michael Jackson passed away a couple years ago; a lot of people were hasty in trying to market off his death, too. A lot of these people were musicians. Whether it was BeyoncĂ© replacing a line in “Halo” to the effect of, “Michael, I can see your halo” or some performers banding together for a tacky tribute, there was something insincere in their homages to the King of Pop.
In February, Maguire released “The Last Dance.” She actually wrote it the day after Jackson’s death.
What makes it so stirring and successful than any of the so-called “tribute singles” is that long after the song’s conclusion, you’re still left feeling that the man was gone well before his time—and it spooks you.

Unlike most writers, Rohin Guha is not terribly afraid of pop music. In fact, he pens the Pop For Skeptics column for Flavorwire. He also does a bit of online content production and social media development and if you want his help on that, go here for more details. This is his vanity blog. He would love to hear from you. Honest.
