Nicole Scherzinger, “Don’t Hold Your Breath”
This is my #8 jam of the year. As far as empowering anthems about telling your exes to eff off go, “Don’t Hold Your Breath” is king. In fact, this song is king, queen, and the rest of the damn royal court. It’s just so stunningly epic and “stunningly epic” may not be the descriptor any of us thinks of when we think of Nicole Scherzinger.
What I love the most about this song is that in a year when it seemed like most pop was coming off a conveyor built, assembled like microchips, this song seemed to be an accidental success. Scherzinger manages a degree of conviction where we believe her when she says, “You can’t touch me now / There’s nothing there left / If you think I’m coming back / Don’t hold your breath.” Better yet: This was the only song to topple Adele’s “Someone Like You” in the UK from the #1 spot earlier this year when that song had its nearly-eternal run at the top of the chart.
Essentially, it’s a perfect pop song. In 2011, this is what perfect pop songs sounds like. And while the rest of Scherzinger’s career appears to be out of tune, this is one note that is pitch perfect.
