Today, Bollywood star Preity Zinta turns 37 years old. She has over 1.2 million followers on Twitter. After years of being an A-lister, she’s finally branching out into film production, which is a big accomplishment for any Bollywood actress in an Indian movie industry that, to some degree, still suffers from a lot of sexism and misogyny. Six years ago, upon finding out that I was moving to New York, I immediately re-watched this film she starred in and imagined finding love in the city and undergoing my own transformation from ugly duckling nerd to sophisticated cool cat, too. The one thing Bollywood has most in common with Hollywood is this: It’s an industry where women tend to be affecting the most change and making the riskier career moves.
